The first female Commercial Judge, Dame Elizabeth Gloster was educated at Rodean School and t Girton College, Cambridge. She was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1971, and established a chancery/commercial practice, latterly at One Essex Court. She was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1989, and was Judge of the Courts of Appeal of Guernsey and Jersey from 1993 to 2004 and a Recorder from 1995 to 2004. In 2004, she was appointed as a Judge of the Queen's Bench Division, nominated to sit in the Commercial Court. She was the Judge In Charge of the Court from 2012 to 2014, another female first. She was a Lady Justice of the Court of Appeal from 201 to 2018, and the Vice President of the Court of Appeal (Civil Division) from 2016 to 2018.

After retiring from the Court of Appeal in 2018, Dame Elizabeth resumed practice as a commercial arbitrator. She also became a Judge of the Abu Dhabi Global Market Courts and of the Court of Appeal of Bermuda.
